After two years of intense R&D, we paused with industry experts from the wine, spirits and craft beer industry, and asked for a brutal assessment, begging for honest and tough criticism. We tested every known oak product and blindly compared it to Soluble Oak. We were not going to continue as a company if 1) Soluble Oak wasn’t the best, and 2) if it wasn’t similar to barrel aging. Soluble Oak dominated in being the only product mimicking barrel aging and was clearly the only product with no secondary flavors (without non-oak flavors). It’s just oak.
Sustainable Oak – Of all the oak in barrels, only a small portion of solution comes in contact with actual oak. The barrel design has been arounds for hundreds of years, and the design is highly inefficient for imparting flavor. Soluble Oak uses 80% less wood than traditional barrels. That’s a huge carbon footprint reduction.
Soluble Oak is also used for revitalizing and reusing old/neutral barrels. After our oak is processed, 100% is repurposed into other products (producing activated carbon and a soil additive for water conservation). Our partners are concerned about the environment, and feel great as leaders promoting green alternatives which significantly reduce carbon emissions. For over 20 years, I have specialized in selling high-end White Oak lumber all over the world. White Oak is a nuanced species and difficult to learn. There are significant differences from within the species - cellular structures vary enormously, characteristics change from region to region based on temperature, moisture, soil content, elevation and much more.
It is a magical species. White Oak’s organic compounds and essential oils are many, and they are delicate and highly heat sensitive. Walking into a dry kiln of White Oak is unforgettable, and the heavenly aromas are almost overpowering. Through the years, many have tried to literally bottle this experience, but the technology has remained elusive.
However, with over two years of research and development with leading research scientists (PhD Medicinal Chemist and PhD Biologist), we had a historic breakthrough in capturing the delicate and nuanced wonder of White Oak. We founded Soluble Oak based on the foundation of holding dear each of the 200+ compounds present in White Oak.
From a business standpoint, we have been unorthodox. We didn’t start by analyzing markets, crunching numbers or thinking about how to optimize profits. Through scientific innovation, we pioneered an environmentally sustainable alternative to barrel aging which uses 80% less oak, and protects majestic old oak trees.
