It is not for everyone. It was developed for those who are passionate about their craft, and who highly esteem quality. Oak is not a commodity, and all oak barrel alternatives are not equal. We like to think that Soluble Oak operates at the crossroads of science and art. It is also for those who are inspired to treat the environment well; for those who would like to reduce their carbon footprint without sacrificing flavor.

  1. Chips do not draw out the best flavors of oak (it is a scientific impossibility given the solution having a fixed and limited alcohol content). The flavor that would be imparted is limited to a narrow oak flavor spectrum and misses the absolute best qualities of White Oak (remember the vanilla!).
  2. Chips are slow, taking several days to get results.
  3. Chips are messy, muddy, and neither instant nor precise.
  4. Chips do not offer a consistent flavor or precision dosing.
  5. Chips are a pain and are labor-intensive.

Soluble Oak™ has three different roasts:  Non-Roasted, Medium Roast, and Dark Roast.

The Classic Roast is an ideal combination of all three roasts.

We also have some products that combine oak species. For example with our wine offering, but offer “Best of Show”, which highlights the mouthfeel of French Oak, with the special flavor notes of American Oak (we consider it groundbreaking, and particularly suited for technology).

An oak stave is typically cut 33mm thick (in the rough) and there is approximately 5 mm penetration of the alcohol product.  ((5mm/33m) – 1 = -.85%)

Given the tight specifications of barrel making, the best-case scenario is that 20 – 25% of the tree fiber is good enough to use for barrel making. (25%)

(5mm/33mm x .25%) -1 x 100 = -96.21%

Soluble Oak effectively extracts from compounds for 100% of the oak fiber.

Conservatively, utilizing barrels to extract oak compounds is at least 96% less efficient when compared to Soluble Oak.

When adding a small amount of Soluble Oak™, one will immediately notice an astounding change in mouthfeel.  Whichever the beverage, this mouthfeel transformation seems to be consistent. For example, with a small dosage, it is easy to transform the harshness of young tequila or bourbon into something silky soft (immolating a nicely aged product).  Young wine with a small dosage can become smooth and silky.  Craft beer can become nicely rounded, giving a sense of wholeness and increasing the drinkability.

Beyond changing the mouthfeel, adding a little more Soluble Oak™ will begin to bring out the pleasing and delicate properties of White Oak (such as vanilla, cinnamon, crème brulee and oakiness).  The more one adds, the more pronounced these notes become.  But proceed caution, one can overdose.

This ability to choose the desired effect of your beverage (be it just changing the mouthfeel, or both changing the mouthfeel and bringing in the pleasing authentic presence of oak), is groundbreaking, and gives you control the desired outcome.

Most dosages are somewhere between .01 – .09 ml per 100 ml of your beverage.  Typically, the lighter the beverage (the least robust), the less Soluble Oak is needed.  For example, a Pilsner or Chardonnay generally needs very little Soluble Oak.  However, with a hearty stout beer, not much Soluble Oak™ is needed to change the mouthfeel, but much more is needed to bring out the oak palette.

We encourage you to use these dosing parameters as mere guidelines, and to always test Soluble Oak with you product to determine dosing (and decide if you just want a change in mouthfeel, or a change in mouthfeel with a pleasing oak presence).

For pricing per dose, please see the Soluble Oak Cost Calculator at the top of this page.

Yes and no. Adding Soluble Oak™ instantly changes your product. However, full transformation can take 7 – 10 days.

It means that our flavor is derived 100% from White Oak, and not from artificial extractants. It is a unique technology in which there are no non-oak flavors (no secondary unnatural flavors). This sets Soluble Oak apart.
As Soluble Oak softens mouthfeel, and rounds bitterness, it can fight with bitter IPA’s. They can skillfully be paired together, but there is a natural antagonism. Soluble Oak is matched best with beers with a lower IBU.
